SYNOPSIS

A documentary short by Dorota Kędzierzawska depicting the work of women in one of Lodz’s textile factories. The film is crafted with remarkable visual care—near-abstract close-ups of machines, threads, and fragments of the workshop floor are interwoven with fleeting shots of workers' hands and faces. The rhythmic clatter of the machinery is counterpointed by a child's cry coming from off-screen. When her shift ends, the film's protagonist rushes home to her waiting child. “Początek” (“Beginning”) is Kędzierzawska's second documentary, made a year after the success of Jajko (“The Egg”, 1982), which was nominated for the Student Academy Award. Though the film speaks the language of poetic impression, it engages with a deeply social phenomenon—the depersonalisation of a human being consumed by labour and left with almost no private life of her own.
