GRAIN

SYNOPSIS

Deprived of any apparent beginning or end, “Grain” is a dynamic and expressive account of a human being’s confrontation with surrounding reality and the negotiation of one’s own boundaries in the world. The artist engages in a spontaneous and intensely physical interaction with the environment. However, she does not explore material culture and its influence on the self and gender performativity, but instead unveils the underlying structure of the human iconosphere.

She juxtaposes her body with archetypal images of dirt, pleasure, triviality, and luxury, constantly shifting the emphasis of her interaction with the world. Through an insatiable urge to touch, she reduces herself to the level of a fragment of animated matter. Visions rich in abstract beauty intertwine, forming a complex structure both conceptually and visually. The film has been widely interpreted within a feminist framework. Here, the artist examines issues of female sexuality in the contemporary sphere of meanings and symbols. (Łukasz Mojsak)
